A musical marathon fit for holidaying heroes

Fifteen former Marines and an army nurse, who were in the Island enjoying a free holiday courtesy of the charity Holidays for Heroes Jersey, were treated to performances by a host of Jersey bands at the Seaton Bar in Seaton Place.

The event raised more than £1,000 for the charity, which helps to support former servicemen and women.

Kevin McGlone, the owner of the Seaton Bar, said that the event, which was sponsored by C&M Scaffolding and ROK Construction, was something they had been trying to organise for a while.

He is now hoping to bring it back next year and has already set a fundraising target of £10,000.

‘It was fantastic,’ he said.

‘It was a pleasure to see all the servicemen and women enjoying themselves, and a few got up and played some music too.

‘Lots of them came over and shook my hand – it was really quite emotional.

‘The music started at around 2 pm and lasted until 7 pm and then we started the karaoke and lots of the guys got up and had a go.’

Mr McGlone said that he spoke to Richard Woodhouse, of Holidays for Heroes Jersey, about holding the event last year but that it had come at too short notice.

He said that for next year’s event, he hoped to get the parish’s approval to close the road outside the pub so that he could increase capacity.

‘All the bands offered their services for free, which was fantastic,’ he added.
