A total of 23 women took part in the first PADI Women’s Day Dive – a global event to promote female scuba diving – and raised £900 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Organisers of the event, which took place at Bouley Bay on Saturday evening, were trying to establish a world record for the most women recorded in a single dive.
Diving centres around the globe took part in the event, so it is not yet known if the record was set in Jersey.
However, organiser Kevin McIlwee said that it could well have been – if only for a short time.
‘We know what the record is for the number of men and women doing a dive together, but we don’t know what the record for just ladies is,’ he said.
‘As it was international women’s scuba dive day yesterday, there might have been bigger groups and we could well have held the record – but maybe only for a short time.’
Mr McIlwee, a diver and member of Jersey Seasearch, was inspired to arrange the event following his wife’s experience with breast cancer.
