Jersey Food festival launched today

  • Five-day Jersey Food Festival is underway from today
  • Events include food tours, open-air markets and ale trails
  • Genuine Jersey are supporting the festival
  • Masterchef semi-finalist Orlando Murrin will be a guest

ISLANDERS can sample Jersey’s fresh produce and meet the people who grow and farm it during the Jersey Food Festival which began today.

The events that make up the five-day festival programme offer opportunities to meet producers, farmers, fishermen and chefs and include farm visits and producer tours – including tours of the oyster beds in the Royal Bay of Grouville and Jersey Dairy.

It was due to be launched at David Hick Interiors in St Lawrence at 4 pm today with a free-entry foodie evening, where growers and food and drink producers were expected to showcase their products.

Masterchef semi-finalist and food writer Orlando Murrin was also due to demonstrate his culinary skills.

From today until Monday, Islanders can choose from a programme that includes ale trails in Rozel and St Mary, foraging under the expert tuition of Kazz Padidar and a sausage and cider evening tomorrow at the National Trust for Jersey’s headquarters at The Elms in St Mary.

Blue Badge Guide Arthur Lamy will be leading a walk taking in St Helier’s food history and the Central and Fish Markets, and on Saturday, Genuine Jersey members will be holding an open air market in the Royal Square.

The festival is being supported by Genuine Jersey, which promotes the diversity and provenance of local produce.

John Garton, the organisation’s chief executive, said: ‘Jersey has a “grown not flown” mantra about its cooking, and this festival is all about celebrating all the culinary treats the Island has to offer. I would encourage everyone to have a look at the brochure – there is so much to do and so much delicious food to taste.’

Copies of the Jersey Food Festival 2015 programme are available from Visit Jersey, formerly Jersey Tourism, at its Esplanade office.
