FORMER Islanders have been celebrating Liberation Day across the world.

Photographs this weekend showed Jersey flags being proudly displayed everywhere from Australia and New Zealand to Canada and Barbados.

Paul Borny from Canberra, Australia, who grew up in Jersey, said that his family all got together especially on Saturday to celebrate Jersey’s 70 years of freedom.

‘We thought you may be interested in our family get together in Australia to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Liberation,’ he wrote.

‘Both Geoffrey and Colin Borny were in Jersey during the Occupation.

‘We all now live in Australia and we decided to get together in Canberra to mark the occasion.

‘Colin and his wife Jan drive down from Bathurst, and Paul and his fiancee Rob flew from Brisbane.’

Also celebrating in Australia was Jacki Connew, who said that she had enjoyed following the Jersey Evening Post’s online coverage of the day to see how Islanders were celebrating.

‘I live in Western Australia now, she wrote.

‘I really enjoyed hearing Sadie Le Sueur Rennard sing Beautiful Jersey and reading the coverage of Liberation Day.’

Meanwhile, in Barbados, old school friends Sara Pugsley – who now lives in Sydney, Australia – and Nikki Holmes celebrated Liberation Day at Dover Beach.

The pair, who are currently on holiday in the Caribbean island, even took a Jersey flag with them onto the beach for their celebration.

Jamie De La Haye from Tauranga, New Zealand sent us the photograph below and said that in New Zealand, more than 50 Channel Islanders, from all over the country, had got together to enjoy a special Liberation Day celebration.

He said that people who were originally from Jersey, Guernsey, Sark and Alderney but now live in New Zealand all joined in the celebrations.

‘Stories about the islands were told and those with us who were there when the islands were liberated re-told their memories of that day,’ said Mr De La Haye.

‘Enjoy your celebration marking this special day, wherever you are in the world.’

And Liberation Day celebrations were also taking place in Canada this weekend.

Graeme Leonard from Kingston, Ontario sent us the photo below of his Canadian home adorned with a Jersey flag.
