100 vehicles take part in Liberation Day parade

Around 100 vehicles drove in convoy from Liberation Square through Broad Street to People’s Park on Saturday afternoon.

Crowds lined the streets to watch the parade, which was also broadcast live on screens in People’s Park for the Islanders that had already gathered there.

About 1,000 people of all ages took part in the event, including cadets Jake Milton and Kobi Le Cornu, who marched with the Air Training Corps.

Les Quennevais student Jake (14) said: ‘I was very proud to take part in the parade but also a bit nervous at the start. It’s really important not to forget what happened.’

De La Salle pupil Kobi (14) added: ‘Everywhere was lined with a lot of people. Wherever we walked there were huge amounts of people waving.’

Among the vehicles taking part in the parade was an American Dodge WL56, which was used by Army generals during the Second World War.

Derek Stead, who had travelled from Yorkshire to take part in the parade and who has been involved in a number of similar events in the past, said that the Island’s celebrations were among the best that he has ever seen.

He said: ‘It has been absolutely brilliant to be part of this. Everyone has been very hospitable and I didn’t expect so many people to be here.

‘When we got into St Helier, we thought, “Wow”. We do a lot of these type of events and this is as good as the Normandy celebrations last year.’

Mr Stead added that he was impressed by how many young Islanders took part in the Liberation Day celebration saying that it was important that children were made aware of their heritage.

Londoner Steve Craik also took part in the parade. He said: ‘Everyone was very appreciative and the streets were packed the whole way round.’

Following the parade, the vehicles parked at People’s Park and Islanders had the chance to climb on board some of them.
