Fly your Jersey flags with pride on Liberation Day, says Senator

Senator Philip Ozouf has called on Islanders to fly Jersey’s flag with pride for the 70th anniversary of Liberation Day.

He posted several pictures of Jersey’s red and white flag on Twitter – and even issued his email address for followers who were in need of a borrowed flag.

Senator Ozouf said that flying flags would help to enhance Jersey’s image on a day when so many eyes would be on us. He also reminded Islanders that this may be the last significant Liberation Day celebration which will be attended by people who lived through the Occupation.

‘As Islanders will know Liberation Day is undoubtedly the most important day in Jersey’s calendar – the day in which we remember the sacrifice of those who were in Jersey and out of Jersey during the years of occupation and celebrate everything that has been achieved in the 70 years since those dark days of occupation came to an end.

Liberation 70 may be the last significant milestone Liberation Day on which many of the Islanders who lived through the occupation will be able to join in the commemorations.

The Countess of Wessex will be attending our National Day celebrations and it is highly probable therefore, that Liberation 70 will attract national media coverage.

Consequently, this year’s Liberation Day is an occasion when we can showcase the Island to the world.

Flying the flag would help to enhance the image of the Island on this important occasion, when so many eyes will be upon us, and I would like to encourage all buildings, and particularly those in prominent locations through which vehicle cavalcades might pass, to raise the Jersey flag, and in the event of more than one flagpole, the Union flag also.

Please fly the flag proudly on Liberation Day.’
