States to discuss Strategic Plan and set Jersey’s priorities for next three years

The Strategic Plan, which sets government policies for the current term of office, was due to be debated from today with health, education, economic growth and St Helier being deemed the biggest priorities.

In January, the Assembly held an in-committee debate in which the majority supported the broad headings that the proposed Strategic Plan put forward, but concerns were raised about how the priorities would be funded.

Given last week’s announcement of a predicted £125 million financial shortfall by 2019, those concerns are likely to be raised once again.

Meanwhile, St Helier Deputy Geoff Southern is calling for a review into Jersey gas prices following recommendations made by the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority regarding current pricing levels.

Earlier this year, Deputy Southern withdrew a proposition to implement a five per cent drop in prices after Jersey Gas announced that there would be a 3.5 per cent decrease.

The Assembly was also due to be asked to approve new members to the Jersey Appointments Commission and the Medical Appeal Tribunal.

In addition, 12 oral questions have been tabled, while Health Minister Andrew Green and Chief Minister Ian Gorst were due to answer questions without notice.

Today’s sitting was due to start at 9.30 am in the States Chamber.
