Pay freeze for all public sector workers

The pay freeze, which covers all public sector workers except nurses and midwives, was revealed to employees after members of the States Employment Board met with public sector unions on Thursday. The freeze means that there will be no cost of living increase for employees.

It follows the announcement made earlier this week that £60 million will have to be found in staff savings after ministers announced a predicted financial shortfall of £125 million by 2019.

John Richardson, the States chief executive, said: ‘We know that this is not easy or welcome news for employees but with the challenges that we face, the SEB is determined that a general increase in pay for 2015 cannot be justified and pay restraints will be key to minimising the need for redundancies across the States.

‘It is also vital we continue to produce a more effective public service by carrying on the good work already started as part of the Public Sector Reform programme.’
