Gallery: First World War ‘Dazzle’ ship taking shape

The old tug, Elektra, has been berthed in St Helier Harbour for many years and is getting the makeover as part of this year’s Skipton Art Series of community events.

Mr Rolls created the design, which is based on ‘dazzle’ camouflage, an abstract system of stripes and lines that was used in the First World War. The optical effect was intended to make it difficult for the enemy to target the ships accurately.

Mr Rolls said: ‘There is a lot more to do, but it is all going to plan. It is looking quite dramatic already. As long as it doesn’t rain, we should be OK, but we have to have one side finished by the fourth of May because of tidal conditions so we can turn the boat around.’
