20th anniversary of St Malo ferry disaster

On Easter Monday 1995, 300 passengers were rescued from the St Malo fast ferry when it struck rocks at Corbière and began to send out frantic distress calls as it rapidly took on water.

The ferry, which was travelling from Jersey to Sark, crashed after it veered off course into shallow waters.

She was met by a number of boats and helicopters – including a Condor fast ferry – which ensured there were no fatalities, although more than fifty people suffered injuries.

Despite the crash, the boat is still being used today – thousands of miles away in the Caribbean.

Renamed Lovely 1, the vessel now operates from Dominica and takes passengers to a number of nearby islands.

An interview with one of the senior ambulance officers who responded to the emergency will follow tomorrow.

The Lovely 1 is now berthed in Dominica
