Two injured in town collision

The woman and a man were taken to hospital after the crash in Great Union Road, at around 3.45 pm on Monday, which involved three vehicles.

Six members of the Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and owing to the nature of injuries sustained by the woman, ‘hydraulic spreaders’, known as ‘the jaws of life’, were used to free her from

her vehicle.

Environmental protection equipment was also used to contain a spillage of fuel and oil.

The Fire and Rescue Service’s new £100,000 multi-purpose vehicle attended the scene, and watch commander Richard Ryan said that it had helped the operation.

‘The equipment that we now carry on our new rescue unit was a big benefit, with it being readily available, and definitely speeded up the extrication time for the casualty,’ he said.
