Praise for owners after dog is rescued from rocks

The cocker spaniel called Cocoa became separated from its owners while walking on the cliff paths near La Moye prison in St Brelade on Wednesday afternoon.

The dog’s owners then alerted nearby residents who phoned the emergency services.

Cocoa was found distressed and barking on boulders in Beauport Bay following a search by the inshore rescue boat.

Injured and with a deteriorating breathing condition, Cocoa was taken to the New Era veterinary emergency room in Georgetown for treatment.

Incident commander Clive Russell praised the dog’s owners for alerting emergency crews rather than putting themselves at risk to rescue their pet.

He said: ‘We will always prefer to help with an animal rescue than have to respond to an owner that gets into difficulty trying to rescue without the necessary equipment.

‘This is a great outcome and a great test and practice of our crew’s skills.’

In a Facebook posting on Wednesday afternoon, Jersey Fire & Rescue said:

We were asked to help with a missing dog after a report from a visiting French couple. The visitors, out walking on the South Coast cliff path alerted the owners of the nearest property, Maison Signaux and they in turn contacted the Fire & Rescue Service.

Our Duty Commander was dispatched to investigate the likelihood of a successful intervention and the best tactics and equipment to use.

On arrival at the last known location Cocoa was out of sight and quiet. With credible witness sightings and a scan of the bay with binoculars the Inshore Rescue Boat was mobilised and launched from St Brelade’s Bay.

A search of the likely area was conducted and a crew member landed on the beach. Much to everyone’s relief, amongst the boulders he found the injured dog and with an extra pair of hands landed to help, transferred Cocoa to the inshore rescue boat in testing surf conditions.

Reunited at Fisherman’s slip St Brelades, owner and dog were transported to the Veterinary emergency department in George Town. we have since discovered that Cocoa has a punctured lung and although poorly is doing very well.

Pets are very much part of the family and very important to their owners. Often so important that owners will put themselves at considerable risk to get to their animals. We will always prefer to help with an animal rescue than have to respondto an owner that gets into difficulty trying to rescue without the necessary equipment, this is a great outcome and a great test and practice of our crews skills, we are very pleased’.
