£20,000: The taxpayers’ bill for court case brought by failed election candidates

Former Deputy Nick Le Cornu, at the time a serving States Member, and Gino Risoli had applied to the Royal Court for a by-election to be held in St Helier No 1 after discovering that one of the seconders on newly-elected Deputy Scott Wickenden’s nomination paper had moved out of the district and was not eligible to support him.

However, the court threw out their case, concluding that although the law had technically been breached, the mistake had not affected the outcome of the election.

On Thursday in the Royal Court, Commissioner Julian Clyde Smith ordered that the States pay the costs of the case as it had been in the public interest to hear the matter.
