Greggs sells record-breaking number of sausage rolls on opening day (But which pasty came out top in our taste test?)

Our man Tom Ogg with a tempting tray of pasties

‘Got to get to Greggs’, we’re told – but do we?

The Tyneside-born bakery chain opened its very first Channel Island store in Jersey ths month, offering Islanders a sumptuous array of pasties, sausage rolls, pasties, vanilla slices and more pasties.

But how does Greggs – the largest bakery chain in the UK, no less – fare against our own much-loved Island bakeries?

In short, have local bakeries now ‘scone’ down in your estimation? Or do you see no ‘knead’ to switch to the competition? Or perhaps you ‘doughnut’ know what the hell to think?

To help you decide, we visited three separate St Helier bakeries: Bloomers, Bruno’s and, of course, Greggs itself. Purchasing two chicken pasties from each, we then took to the streets to find the answer to the question on everyone’s slightly scalded lips…

Pasties: nasty or nice?
