Harbourmaster paid off to leave job two years ago

The watchdog’s report, which was published two years ago, did not make public the names of the individuals concerned, their job titles or the departments they had worked for.

Mr Le Cornu left the States in March 2012 as part of measures taken during the merger of the management of the Harbour and Jersey Airport into the Ports of Jersey. A new, more senior chief executive post, which incorporated the role of Harbourmaster, was created and filled by Doug Bannister, who still does the job today.

At the time that Mr Le Cornu’s departure was announced the then Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean said that there would be no ‘golden handshake’ for the civil servant as there had been for former States chief executive Bill Ogley, who controversially received £546,337 when he left his job. Instead he said that the Harbourmaster’s departure was being managed within the ‘normal States of Jersey terms’ – a comment he stands by today.
