It is a phrase that you will hear all too often on our little rock. It refers to the fact that our 2 am licence curfew on clubbing venues is an inherently outdated view.
Should we, the tax-paying public, not be able to decide when enough is enough? I’m far from the idea of turning Jersey into some mid-Channel Ibiza, but come on, 2 am, seriously!
Let’s just stretch our imaginations to say 4 am. I think there are major advantages to be had here. A 4 am closing time would dramatically stagger the masses leaving St Helier in a much more orderly manner. The taxi queue and takeaways would be near hassle-free and this in turn would have a massive effect on relieving our emergency services.
Residential noise disturbances after hours would drop too, as the clubbers stay right where they should be… in the club.
I think we need to pressurise certain States Members to trial this system, the advantages are real and it is about time we realistically looked at a change of policy.
