Digging up the past – in the name of justice

It has been a whirlwind few years for the Queen’s College Belfast academic – who was in the Island this week to talk at the Channel Islands Group of Professional Engineers seminar – during which he has had to balance his life in lecture halls with attending crime scenes and becoming accustomed to dealing with dead bodies and other stomach-turning sights.

‘I found myself out on Christmas Eve once with a headless man in a forest,’ he said. ‘They thought it was a murder, but he was actually someone who had been in rehab, had absconded and had found his way out, probably the previous summer.’
