States likely to pass cost of rates bill on to businesses

Senator Philip Ozouf has now set out how the estimated £900,000 cost of the main part of that plan – the States paying rates on its buildings – could be met by putting up commercial rates Islandwide.

Three possible options to make the proposal ‘cost neutral’ for the States have been put forward – increasing rates for both domestic and commercial ratepayers, increasing rates for commercial ratepayers only or for domestic ratepayers only.

However, Senator Ozouf said in his view there is only one option – to put up commercial rates.

Find out more about what the options involve in this weekend’s JEP.
