My Battle – Paige Higgins

It was five years ago, when I was five, and I helped on the St Martin Junior’s Lego float. I helped to cut and glue the flowers. Our family friends were involved with the float and they got us involved. It was amazing when the float was finished to be able to say, ‘I’ve helped make that’.

How have you been involved since?

I’ve helped every year since. In the lead up to the Battle I have papier-mâchéd, painted, flowered and harestailed the float. And in the parade itself I have always sat on the float until last year whhen I danced in front of it.

What are you doing this year?

This year there isn’t a junior float so I am helping with the senior St Martin float. Last week when the flowers arrived I helped unpack them and put them in water. I’ve also helped with harestailing and spray painting.

In the Battle I will get to ride on the float with Miss Battle, Holly Perchard, and Mr Battle, Ray Quinn. Holly is really kind and pretty and I’m really excited about meeting Ray because I watched him on Dancing On Ice. I think it’s going to be really good fun, I’m really excited about it. I’m looking forward to waving to the crowd and being able to watch all the dancing. There will be a really good atmosphere and everyone will be looking at our float.

What’s the best float you’ve ever seen in the Battle?

My favourite St Martin float was Jai Ho in 2012, because I loved the big elephant and I helped to harestail it. I thought it looked really good. I also really liked the roller coaster on the Jersey Young Farmers Club float in 2011 – it looked really cool and had loads of mechanics. It is amazing that they can make things go up and down and round and round like that.

Why do you love being involved with the Battle?

I like building the float with my friends and being in the parade. I like the atmosphere and being able to dance and wave to everyone.
