Island may adopt new packaging rules to cut price of cigarettes

The report by the competition regulator shows that about 30p of the price difference is due to manufacturers having to produce small runs of cigarette packets with specific Channel Islands wording.

Senator Maclean said that the report by the Channel Islands Competition Regulatory Authorities showed that the EU was considering bringing in pictorial warnings on packets when a new tobacco directive came into force in 2016.

‘It may be that this will produce some opportunities for Jersey to be able to access standardised packaging that will make it cheaper for suppliers to buy stock,’ he said.
