Two major town stores rule out Sunday trading

Currently only smaller shops are allowed to open, but the Economic Development department has recently launched a consultation on plans for an 18-month trial during which all shops would be allowed to trade on Sundays.

A panel of Mr Syvret, Juliet Karugahe, executive officer of the Jersey Community Relations Trust, and Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean heard from guest speakers including Mr Voisin on the issue.

Mr Voisin said his shop would not be opening on Sundays and added: ‘The issue of Sunday trading is a misguided suggestion.

‘It would have a detrimental impact and hasten the decline of retail in the Island.

‘Sunday trading will not put additional income into Islanders’ pockets and it will simply spread spending over seven days rather than six – it will be the businesses that have to pay for opening for an extra day.’
