Scrutiny panel to look at interim immigration proposal

Ministers have proposed sticking with the existing target of allowing 150 new heads of household – the equivalent of 325 people when families and dependents are taken into account – into Jersey every year.

That target would, if approved by the States, be in place for the next two years until a more permanent policy can be agreed following a major consultation.

The target has been exceeded every year since it was introduced in 2009, but ministers have pledged to enforce it this time using new powers introduced under the Control of Housing and Work Law.

Corporate Services chairman Senator Sarah Ferguson now plans to question Senator Routier about the rationale for the interim plan before reporting back to the States before the debate on the issue in April.

The hearing takes place in the Blampied Room of the States Building at 3.15pm. It is scheduled to last an hour and is open to the public.
