Unusual car registration plates could be up for sale or auction

Transport and Technical Services are asking the States to formally allow the department to auction or sell at a set price number plates that are not currently registered to a vehicle in the Island.

The department used to auction-off J and JSY plates in the late 1990s but no numbers have been put up for sale since 2005.

Under the proposals, residents would also be allowed to reserve upcoming registrations and could be able to browse through existing lists to see which combinations are available.

The head of Driving and Vehicle Standards, Alan Muir, said that the proposed law change would give TTS more opportunities to make money from highly sought-after number plates.
