A ROAD in Madeira's capital Funchal will be renamed after St Helier this year in an effort to continue strengthening the friendship between the two cities, it has been announced.

The reciprocal gesture comes after James Street, behind the old Odeon cinema, was renamed Rue du Funchal at a ceremony last April to mark the twinning of the two cities.

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said that he had received official confirmation from Funchal authorities that they would change the name of a street in the city to Rua de St Helier.
