MORE than 400 job opportunities have been created in Jersey by a major drive to attract investment from outside of the Island.

Economic Development Minister Alan Maclean says that a new States service marketing the Island as a place to set up businesses and for wealthy people to live has generated 120 inquiries in its first year.

His comments come in the wake of the announcement from online retailer Play.com that 147 jobs will go in the coming months, adding to already-record unemployment figures.

Lets see the figures broken down so we can where these opportubities have been created.

SEBKY

Will these jobs be going to locals (with over 5 years residency), and will they pay a decent living wage???.

Growing

SEBKY, it's for business owners or existing companies, so they will want to employ the staff they need (with or without 5 years).

"With an enviable culture of safety and privacy; high quality health and leisure facilities; a world class education system; globally renowned professional services and easy and frequent access to the UK, Europe and beyond, Jersey is the ideal location for you, your family and your business"

I love the 1st bit already:-)

Kermit

Is that 400 public sector workers ?

It s not very clear...

400 jobs financed by the tax payer to generate 120 inquiries is not a achievement in my books.

Can't be right !

Kermit

opportunities : nothing concrete yet then...

Old Crappo

So 400 job opportunities have been created and what may I ask is the definition of "a job opportunity" exactly as opposed to the creation of 400 jobs? I would also find it interesting to know how many companies/individuals were actually contacted by this new States service marketing the Island to generate 120 inqueries over 12 months?.

It seems to me that Clanger McLean is trying to learn the art of spinning from the master himself, the Boy Ozouf, but I think he has quite a way to go yet!

WoW

400 job opportunities in the World of Warcraft more like.

Devon

It should be about SAVING JOBS, I am sure those ex staff at places like Amazon & Play.Com would agree with me !

wan

The Minister has been taking spin lessons from Ozouf. Do I sense a state of panic in our government ?

jerseydaz

I have just re-read this article whilst spinning round very fast. But no, it still doesn't make sense. It seems it's not me who is doing the spinning.

Flymo

Try spinning round in the the other direction, it may help.

This is such a travesty. The website is making claims with no evidence or facts.

First untrue statement. 'high quality health' - If your illness is server then you will not be able to get treated in Jersey.

Second untrue statement. 'world class education system'. If such a statement is true then it must also follow that you can have world class education system without universities? Also what about the fact that only 25% of students at state skills actually achieve satisfactory grades?

Third untrue statement. 'easy and frequent access to the UK.' Yes, as condor ferries has kindly demonstrated to us.

Anyone with remote intelligence can see that Jersey is sinking, who wants to jump on sinking Ship? Not me.

anon

John, your comments are such a travesty. I agree on one hand the website claims are broad, but you are criticising the website without yourself offering measures:

High quality health - our health service is first class. If you don't think so, you haven't been unwell here and elsewhere.

World Class Education - we still manage to produce graduates though. And what level of education are we talking about?

There are plenty of flights, and Condor does actually get there. And it's pretty easy I think.

Are you actually in Jersey? Maybe you should jump off if the grass is greener elsewhere ... Why are you still here? Oh, of course, really you're just unhappy but couldn't face a rather more challenging life elsewhere ...

Mjolnir de Jersiaise

I've had to have extensive dealings with our health service, over the past two years, and I can assure you that it is horrendous. It might be okay for minor complaints, where a dose of antibiotics will do the trick, or for other easily diagnosable, and easily treatable, conditions; but for anything a little more awkward you run into appalling difficulties. Professional arrogance, staff shortages and long waiting times are standard - but that's just the beginning of troubles. For anything potentially serious, there is only one viable solution: call a Priest and hope for the best...

Mario

Price is another major factor. Having to pay more to get off the island than tourists do to get here isn't a good way to encourage people to come here. Add in the cost of basic commodities and import costs etc etc. Prices of houses.....a lack of jobs. A death spiral if ever I saw one.

Starker

5 Devon - You remember the insanely expensive legal effort to try and save those jobs right? Or is this just another typical TIJ commentator's selective memory to make sure it sounds like the states are the devil incarnate?

D de Jersey

If it's true... Great.

Is it job opportunities as opposed to actual jobs? If you're just being clever with your you'll be found out soon enough Maclean.

john

where have these 400 jobs been advertised?

I certainly haven't seen them.

john

I suggest that if you haven't looked at the Locate Jersey website you do so- just for a laugh.

World class hospital anyone.

Old Crappo

12, John,

Yes I see what you mean, I've just had a quick look at the Locate Jersey site, however I am feeling a little dizzy now with all the "spin" that's on it. Behind the scenes I see the hand of the Spin Master himself the Boy Ozouf probably assisted by Clanger McLean may be?

James Wiley

Ah so this is what Jersey Business has spent all its funding on, an advert.

Cut taxes, lessen the regulatory burden. The only thing that will work, the only thing the government will not do.

Government raises taxes, wastes money and implements further regulation.

Government simply does not serve the people or community, time for a revolution.

Alphonse

Errr...'high quality health care'? Is that the one where it has taken exactly 12 months from seeing my G.P. to getting an appointment with a consultant at the hospital or is that the other private service where I could have paid and seen the same man 11 months and three weeks ago?

Pip Clement

The right wing in Jersey will believe almost anything.

So no problems over 400 imaginary jobs.

Unemployment up to 2,100 by March and the same shit story from the lying twats? :-)

evelyn

I wish these people would stop lying all the time it is crimminal to lie the people should stand up to this

roombay42

It is the 'left wing' in Jersey who have instilled the idea that you don't have to work because you can claim benefits.

Don't forget, the more unemployed on benefits are more likely to vote for a socialist state's member.

Mario

I'd say more like 3k and above now. All those who are unemployed are not all on the official figures as unemployed. Examples being work schemes, going back into education due to not having a job to go to etc etc.

The whole lot is like a UXB waiting to go off at any minute. Meanwhile in command central it is a case of "being well placed"!

I for one don't believe government B.S, never have, never will. Unfortunately the electorate in general is easily led, a promise here, and a promise there, on an election manifesto, and it's a cross for you!

;)

Desperado

Oh, well that solves a few problems then doesn't it Millionaire Mclean. I'm told the tooth fairy really exists too!

Did you bang your head when you fell off that gravy train into cuckoo land???

COM-Mentator

Read between lines for an insight into our COM's thought process.

Opportunities is the key word. If the States has issued a licence for a bank, which currently does not exist in the island, and that bank has said it will employ 50 people then there are 50 'opportunities' IF the bank actually sets up shop and employs those 50 day one is another matter.

Some of them will be new start ups which will fail in the first 6 months to a year.

Another states department trying to justify their cost to the tax payer. ACTUAL jobs please not paper jobs and spin.

Unemployment will be 2500 by year end!! thats 2.5% of the population (not bad for a major country - which our COM tend to think they are) but an island of 100k+ people?

Berny

Well 2.5% sounds great but if you count the actual working population it's not even great for a country. We just have to look at the amount of over 65's we have and it gets worse.

Mo

Minister please tell where these jobs are? Intrigued to know.....

Maw

I think EDD should start helping and investing in local tourism businesses First. All I hear from people in the industry,is the tourism department don't back any new ventures in the industry or help with planning or finance, How do you expect any one to go into the business when you're not getting any Help!! Go and ask the owners of the Amazin maze, how many times they've ask for help and the rejection from the planning department to get things passed? Its a joke, when you think how finance has never had any problems getting what they want!!

Joe

Think you will find that EDD has a Tourism Development Fund (TDF) which invests into new and existing ventures, and your firend at the Maze sits on its committee. Do an online search for it, they have invested millions, trouble is most tourism ventures are crap so don't bring any more visitors over. I asked Tourism to write to planning to support my application which they did and they could not do enough to help me, of course they would not give me any finance but that's not their remit, McLean has set up Jersey Business for this purpose

chico

which planet does Minister Alan Maclean is living on??

Wander

Funny enough, I've seen that asking prices for apartments have risen again. Jersey is a weird and crazy place, buyers are prepared to pay anything and it never stops, as long as some banks still lend.............

COM-Mentator

Need to stop external 'non-resident' people from buying these apartments as investments.

There are apparently over 500 empty properties in Jersey and still we want to build more..

Bizarre world indeed when we are now building properties just for the develoeprs to make money and to retain the and increase property prices.

roombay42

400 jobs created! So we now have 400 more civil servants.

Andre

Note the wording Mclean used: '400 job opportunities'. Not necessarily the same thing as 400 jobs. I could go into town and have '1,000 purchasing opportunities'without actually buying anything! Beware the weasel word of politicians!
