Never forget the price of freedom

With events around the Island marking 67 years of liberation from Nazi occupation, Mr Birt told the hundreds of people gathered in Liberation Square that the day was one of celebration.

And that tone was repeated at a ceremony at Westmount marking the sacrifice of forced and slave workers, many of whom were Russian. During the ceremony Colonel Maxim Elovik, representing the Embassy of the Russian Federation, said that the day was ‘a celebration with tears in our eyes’.

The day saw a full programme of events, including a ceremonial States sitting, the re-enactment of Force 135 raising the Union Flag from the Pomme d’Or Hotel and performances by the Band of the Island of Jersey, La Ronde Concert Band, the Jersey Big Band and others.
