Iron test for Jersey’s footballers

Scunthorpe are on a six-day training camp ahead of the fast-approaching new season and with new additions in their squad there is plenty to play for as their players bid to win a starting place in their first Championship match away to Cardiff City on 8 August.

First-team coach Ian Baraclough, who attended school in Jersey and won a Star Trophy cap before leaving the Island as a teenager, played over 600 professional matches, said: ‘We’re working hard pre-season and we’re looking forward to the game. We know Jersey did well in the recent Island Games and we know it will be a decent test for us.

‘We’ve several new players in our squad and as well as working on fitness there is team bonding as well. It’s very important that the newcomers integrate with the group and that will come with us being here.’

The match starts at 7 pm.
