Martyn decides Trinity Shield battle of Saints

FOLLOWING a 6-0 win at St John on Saturday, St Brelade will meet Grouville at Springfield in the final of the Trinity Shield tomorrow night.

As both managers agreed afterwards, it was a decisive win. One-nil up even as the 60-strong crowd were making their way to the touchline after Gary Freeman had tucked the ball away from an immaculate JP Martyn cross from the right, St Brelade could so easily have made it 2-0 in the fourth minute when Freeman scuffed a shot to the right of the posts with the goalkeeper already beaten.

One goal, two chances, and in a one-sided contest St Brelade continued to flow forward in direct, no-nonsense attacks on the St John goal which resulted in a 4-0 lead for the westerners by half-time.

‘We didn’t play as well as we can and we weren’t consistent enough,’ said Paul Roche, the St John manager. ‘We played well in patches, but we were relying on their side having an off day and for us to play the kind of good football we’re capable of.’
