McBride, Freeman on target in Trinity Shield

ST BRELADE won through the first round of the Trinity Shield last night with a 5-2 victory against St Martin at Les Quennevais.

For the second night running the winning parish netted five goals, with Jordan McBride and Gary Freeman both scoring twice to add to a single from Island under-21 captain James Quérée. Twice St Martin equalised through Justin Jouan and junior John Borg, the latter scoring the goal of the game with a free kick from 35 yards.

St Brelade manager Darren Mollet said: ‘It was a tight and sporting game all the way, and although we finished with ten men because of injury, I thought we deserved the win. We were fortunate with our third goal when Gary Freeman closed down the goalkeeper and his clearance hit Gary to rebound into the goal to put us 3-2 up. But sub Michael Ahier held the ball up well when he came on and we played much better with him on the field.’
