College win U13 cup final shoot-out

VICTORIA College won the Jersey Secondary Schools Sports Association’s under-13 cup final on Saturday after a penalty shoot-out win against Haute Vallée.

The match finished 3-3 after extra time at the FB Fields before Charlie Le Quélènec scored the college’s sixth penalty to secure the college the trophy for the fourth time in five years. It was an entertaining game, with the college taking the lead after a well worked corner led to Billy Hickling firing in on a near post.

They doubled their advantage when Ollie Terry converted at the back post after a flowing move. It was more evenly contested in the second half and Haute Vallée got back in the game ten minutes in when Zak Boakye-Yiadom finished off following a powerful run.

As the game got stretched both teams squandered chances to add to their score before Boakye-Yiadom equalised for Haute Vallée with five minutes remaining. Carl Duncan nodded College 3-2 ahead early in extra time from Hickling’s cross, only for Haute Vallée to score in the final minute through Conor Edwards to take the match into penalties.

College master Matt Smith said: ‘It was a highly entertaining game which could have gone either way. Haute Vallée deserve huge credit for battling back twice to stay in the game. It was a shame it had to be decided on penalties, but we are pleased with the result as it qualifies us for the Channel Islands Cup final with Elizabeth College.’
