Football kicks off

TRINTY F&SC and Grouville recorded opening day Premiership victories in the Coca-Cola Jersey Football Combination on Saturday.

Trinity, who had utility player John Beatson sent off in the 54th minute after receiving a second yellow card, won 3-0 at home to Jersey Wanderers while Grouville won for the second time in five days – after their Charity Cup win last Monday – at St Peter following a 3-1 scoreline.

The other three matches all resulted in 3-1 wins for the travelling teams with Jersey Nomads, Magpies and St Brelade all successful at St John, St Lawrence and St Martin/SCF respectively.

Jersey Wanderers Reserves came from a goal down at the break to defeat champions St Paul’s Reserves 6-3 at the Hockey Club in Division I. Paul Singh and Paul McGinness (two) were on target for the Saints and David Kenyon (two, one a penalty), Andy Modral, Kyle Rea, Scott Slicer and Charlie Payne for Wanderers.

Goals from Paul Nicell, Steve Ashton, Sammy Wright and Lee Sabastion – all in the second half – helped Grouville Reserves to a 4-0 success at Le Boulivot against St Peter Reserves.

David Streets was the leading individual marksman on the day scoring six times in St Brelade Reserves’ 14-1 hammering of St Martin/SCF Reserves in Division II at St Brelade.

Dan Romeril (four), Luca Nicolle (three) and Mike Ozanne also notched for the hosts with Scott Madden converting the visitors’ consolation.

Jersey Nomads Reserves won 2-0 at St John Reserves after goals by Mark Harris and Chris Duhamel.

Tony Salaun and Carl Benest netted for Jersey Wanderers C and St John C in a 1-1 Division III draw at the Hockey Club.

Rozel Rovers C won by the odd goal in seven at Le Couvent against St Peter C. Shane Parker (two), Joe Cooland and Rob Lucas were on the mark for the hosts and Gary Bateley (two) and Freddie Mendes for the visitors.

St Ouen C won through to the first round of the G4 Securicor Locksmiths Trophy without kicking a ball as a result of St Martin/SCF C failing to turn up for their preliminary round match at St Ouen. St Ouen will now play St John C in a first-round match at the Airport on Saturday 11 October.
