And they owed their success to some fine goalkeeping from 51-year-old Graham Le Cornu who pulled off several good stops to deny Wanderers at least a share of the points at the Hockey Club.

St Peter warmed up for this Saturday’s home match with champions Jersey Scottish by defeating St Paul’s 4-2 at St Saviour.

Marco Vieira hit a hat-trick for the winners, his third goal late on scored from almost on the half-way line.

‘It was a wonder goal,’ said St Peter manager Jon Trigg.

‘Their goalkeeper cleared the ball and when it came to Marco he drove it like a golf shot and it flew it a top corner.

It really was an excellent strike.

‘We had enough chances to have closed the game out but when they scored to make it 3-2 we had a difficult five minutes under pressure before Marco completed his hat-trick.’ Scott Walsh hit St Peter’s other goal with junior Craig Russell bagging both for St Paul’s.

St Peter, whose only league defeat this season was at Trinity on 27 August last year, have joined Scottish in joint second place on 29 points.

The Scots have a game in hand and both trail leaders Trinity, who have played two more than the Scots, by three points.

Division II leaders St Ouen had their lead cut to three points after they twice came from behind to share four goals with hosts St Martin/SCF.

Mark Nightingale and Mark Harris netted for the hosts and Scott Quarrell and Andy Modral for the visitors.

Jersey Nomads closed the gap after Mark Herridge struck the only goal giving Nomads a 1-0 win against St Clement at Les Quennevais, avenging last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat in the Touzel Memorial Trophy.

Portuguese Club also put last weekend’s Touzel defeat by Magpies behind him.

José-Manuel Vieira hit a 30-yard cracker in his hat-trick with Carlos Ferreira grabbing a double in a 5-0 win against the ‘Pies at Les Quennevais.

Beeches Old Boys won at the same venue, 3-0 against Sporting Academics after a brace by Bob Bonney and Jamie Shaw’s single.

Matt Cornic, Jez Startup and junior Stuart Daynes scored St John’s goals in a 3-2 home win against St Lawrence.

Tony Riley missed a penalty for the winners with St Lawrence on target through Mike Donoghue and Steve Le Quesne.

John Rutter and Graham Ling hit hat-tricks in Trinity’s 8-2 home success over St Paul’s in Division I Reserves.

Barry Beatson added a pair.

Junior Ollie Gallagher bagged both for St Paul’s.

Rozel Rovers moved above Jersey Wanderers after goals from Carsten Hug and Lee Kent took them to a 2-0 win against Wanderers at the FB Fields.

Roley McMichael and James Buckley registered St Peter’s goals in a 2-0 home success over Sporting Academics in Division C.

First-round Lady Bingham Trophy matches were played with the reserve teams of Portuguese Club, Beeches Old Boys and Magpies winning through to the semi-finals on Saturday 1 April.

Carlos Simoes and Carlos Figueira netted Portuguese Club’s goals in a 2-0 success over St Martin/SCF at Les Quennevais, where Danny Harris missed a penalty for the Saints.

Hamlyn Moon bagged at Beeches’ goals for a 3-0 success over St Clement at the FB Fields.

Neil Brédonchel and Simon Davies were on target for Magpies and Sporting Academics respectively, following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes and extra time the ‘Pies won the shoot-out 4-2.

The semi-finals are Magpies v Portuguese and St John v Beeches Old Boys – both games to be played at Les Quennevais.
