Football:Former Junior Island manager to be Vincenti’s No 2

The former successful junior Island manager steps into the breach immediately but only until the end of this season.

Welsh, who had a highly successful six-year reign in charge of Jersey’s under-18s, said: ‘Peter asked me to assist him through to the end of the season and I’m happy to do that.

I had no real intention to do anything at the moment but with it being a short-term role I’m happy to help out.

‘I’ve not worked with senior players previously so it will be a big learning curve for me.

It’s a challenge and I like challenges.

‘Peter is utilising people currently in the Jersey set up and personally I think that is good because it helps with continuity.

‘A strong under-21 squad has been chosen for the Northern Ireland U18s’ match at Springfield on Tuesday and a large majority of the squad I have worked with when they were U18s.

‘Several of the early years players have gone right through to the senior squad, players like Chris Andrews, Stuart André, Jimmy Styles and Kevan Crowell, and with a few more knocking on the door it should keep the senior players on their toes and that’s the way it should be.’ Vincenti has also chosen his first senior squad, for the South West Counties Championship match at home to Gloucester on Saturday 11 February.

It is: Gareth Bayley, Dominic Maher, Marcus Bailey, Scott Walsh, Kevan Crowell (St Peter), Jimmy Styles, David Lloyd, Danny Craven, Luke Watson (Trinity), Carl Eubank (St Paul’s), Stuart André, Craig Leitch, Dave Brodie, Ross Crick, Chris Andrews (Jersey Scottish), Luc Le Mière (Grouville) and Bradley Russell (First Tower).

Welsh added: ‘Jersey’s first U21 and senior games have come very early for the new management and many other players have still to be looked at.

We will take one match at a time, the senior squad is for the Gloucester game and the squad for the Alderney Muratti semi-final could be very different.

‘Many other players are still in contention, it’s an early chance to have a look at these 17 players first against Gloucester.’ The senior squad will have their first session together next Wednesday at Les Quennevais, starting at 6 pm.

Anyone unable to attend show contact Jon Welsh, telephone 482872 or 07797 744 577.

Vincenti has brought in former St Peter assistant Gerry Le Marrec to look after Jersey’s kit while he has yet to announce medics for the U21 and senior teams.

Jersey U21s have a trial match against Jersey’s U18s at the IJ Bathe Field on Sunday morning, kick-off 10.30 am.

Welsh and Mike Le Garignon will be taking the U21s in Vincenti’s absence this week while on Tuesday Walsh and Le Garignon will take the U21s for the match against Northern Ireland Schools’ FA U18s at Springfield.
