Football:Tower stay top, despite scare

Tower won 6-3 at La Hague Manor but not before they were given a pre Halloween scare, when after leading 3-0 they were pegged back to 3-3 – and that after St Paul’s had gone down to ten players with the dismissal of Claire Tonner for a verbal offence.

But tiredness crept into St Paul’s’ play and Tower notched three more goals to win and remain ahead of St John on goal-difference, St John winning 5-0 against Grouville.

St Paul’s manager Charlie Browne said: ‘Claire let herself and the team down and her dismissal stung us into action.

Jemma Daniel scored a fantastic hat-trick, two of her goals were from 25 yards and I’m sure if she carries on scoring like that it won’t be long before she gets an Island call up.

‘We fought back really well but the effort we put in eventually cost us as we were extremely tired at the end.’ Louise Vandervliet, Kerry Sauvage, Nicola Poisson, Leanne Bell and Lisa McLaughlin netted for Tower.

St John, who had seven regulars missing, showed their strength in depth to beat Grouville 5-0 at Le Boulivot.

The Saints pressed the hosts back and after a goal-less first half Laura Robertson put them ahead.

St John continued to dominate and they added further goals through Fiona Mackinnon, Nina Woods, Tracy Cahill and Robertson again to retain their 100 per cent record.

St Peter had some excellent possession as they brushed aside St Clement 5-0 at St Peter.

Joe Fuller and Candice Sharples both scored twice while Gemma Dunning hit the other – an unstoppable left-foot drive that gave St Clement goalkeeper Krystle Matthews, who pulled off some good saves, no chance at all.

St Brelade climbed to the dizzy heights of fourth place after registering their second win of the season, 2-1 at the Hockey Club against Jersey Wanderers.

Saints’ Giselle Gosselin was dismissed after two yellow cards.

Karrie Buesnel and Kirsty du Heaume scored for the winners with Helen Durkin replying.
