Murray, who was a semi-pro for East Kilbride Juniors before coming to Jersey, played full back for Wanderers and was selected for the Island in the 1992/3 Muratti.

His only other managerial experience is as boss of First Tower Ladies.

The appointment comes following the dismissal Martyn Stratford at the beginning of the year in a season where the club was involved in a relegation dogfight and only narrowly avoided the drop into the Coca-Cola Combination Division II Club president Gary Dauvin and committee man Nick Thomas took over from Stratford and since then have been searching for a permanent replacement.

Said Dauvin: ‘We’re delighted that Martin has agreed to take on the role of first team head coach – he’s exactly what we’ve been looking for for quite a while.

‘We offered him the position following a meeting earlier this week when he outlined his plans for coaching and managing our senior men’s sides.

‘We were particularly impressed with Martin’s enthusiasm for developing our younger players and bringing them into senior football in a controlled manner.’ ‘With the right blend of experienced players, supported by our already excellent junior set up, we aim to put in place a management and coaching structure that will stand the club in good stead for the longer term.

‘Under Martin’s guidance we aim to once again become one of the Island’s top clubs.’ Murray said: ‘I’m delighted – as an ex-Wanderers player I know the club well and I know how ambitious everyone here is.

My aim is to develop high standards and a culture of excellence within our teams and to make Wanderers a club that players enjoy playing for whilst also winning matches.

‘We have an excellent squad, including some great youngsters, and, with some hard work during the pre-season, we can look forward to next season with a reasonable degree of confidence.’ Meanwhile Wanderers have also appointed Mike Freer as the ladies team manager.

Added Dauvins: ‘Mike has started working with the Ladies squad as training continues through the summer period.

He’s worked with our Ladies before and we are delighted to have him join us on a full-time basis.’
