Football:Sauvage brace secures double

Island player Kerry Sauvage (two) and young Serena Guthrie scored the goals to steer Tower to a 3-0 win against St John.

Tower assistant Geoff Van Der Vliet said: ‘It was a well-contested game and very entertaining.

Kerry scored two fine goals following excellent corners from Danielle Evans while Serena showed great skill to beat a couple of players before hitting the target’ ‘Full credit to St John, they were without a handful of good players and they never gave up.

‘They had a chance cleared off the goal-line by Michelle Bichard while Jess Vieira was denied by an excellent save from Stephanie Henwood.’ St John, who had five regulars out of the Island – fought gamely throughout.

Saints manager Jayson Lee said: ‘We found it hard to cope with the speed of the First Tower players but battled on and had chances to score.

‘Our commitment was first class and missing five players did make it difficult for us.

But the girls who came in all played well.

‘Tower’s goalkeeper made the save of the match from Jess Vieira’s 25-yard shot while we had Bev Luton to thank for keeping us in the game with a couple of excellent saves too.

‘We’ve come a long way this season, we were third from bottom of the table after three games, and I feel we are a team who can challenge Tower next season.’ Plans are afoot to have a ladies’ Upton this season, probably on the same day as the men who play on Sunday 23 April.
