Muratti:Your Island needs you!

Muratti:Your Island needs you!

The sluggish sales have prompted Jersey manager Dave Matthews to make a heartfelt plea for supporters to make the trip north for the match in Guernsey on 2 May.

‘One of the major factors of this game is likely to be nerves and we need support in the ground to help the team,’ said Matthews.

‘Come on Jersey, get behind your team.’ Jersey has been allocated 800 tickets for the match which, for the first time, will be held in an all-seater, 5,000 capacity arena around the Foote’s Lane pitch.

But with just three weeks to go, fewer than half have been sold.

All the Jersey fans will be together behind one of the goals, but the organisers will have to re-think if they cannot sell them all.

Cherry Godfrey Muratti organiser Darren Duquemin says the ‘sold-out’ signs will be going up in Guernsey soon but Jersey is lagging far behind.

‘Eight hundred seats have been allocated for Jersey’s fans and they are all in one stand behind one of the goals.

We’ve done that to get the best atmosphere possible at the game and I urge Jersey followers to come and support their team,’ he said.

Matthews was unaware that less than one-sixth of the seats had been allocated for Jersey fans and says it is essential that they fill their allocated space.

‘The players will have never played in a game this big in an arena like this and they will need support, it is vital for them.

This is the biggest match for a long, long time and it’s the biggest game they’ll probably ever play in.

The players and the management really need the support because it could make a big difference on the day.’ Matthews says Guernsey fans are traditionally ‘up for’ the Muratti more than their Jersey counterparts.

‘Even when it’s in Jersey and there are 500 Guernsey fans they make more noise.

We need to change that this year, we need to hear some noise,’ he said.

Duquemin says the Centenary final will be the best ever from a spectator’s point of view.

‘The effort gone into staging the Centenary Muratti has been phenomenal.

It promises to be the biggest showpiece ever and nobody at the ground will miss any of the action as the big screen will be seen by everyone and it will be showing match replays.’ Tickets in Jersey are available from the Cherry Godfrey office in Charles Street, St Helier, and Checkers superstores at Les Quennevais and Longueville.

n Condor Ferries are putting on a match-day special, priced £32.

The package includes the return boat fare, bus travel to and from the Foote’s Lane ground and match ticket.

The fast ferry leaves Jersey at 11.15 am arriving in Guernsey at 12.10.

It departs Guernsey at 7 pm.

There will also be extra capacity returning on the Clipper at 17.30 pm.

Over half of the 300 day-trip packages are available from Condor.

The sponsors are also offering a free ticket to all players who have played in a Muratti Vase final.

Tickets are £8, £10 and £12.

Past players will need to get their free tickets from Cherry Godfrey; they will also be able to buy tickets for friends and family to sit with them.

Past players need to provide proof of ID and also sign a form to say that the specially stamped ticket is for their own personal use.

Supporters wishing to go to Guernsey for the weekend can take in the Portsmouth Trophy Junior Upton on Saturday 30 April together with under-18 inter-insular Portholme Trophy matches the same day.

The Ladies’ Muratti is on Sunday 1 May, at Blanche Pierre Lane, kick-off 2 pm followed by the men’s match the following day, kick-off 2.30 pm.
