The Coca-Cola Combination Division I match, between the Le Riche Cup finalists, finished goal-less at Le Boulivot, but things turned sour as the players headed back towards the changing rooms.

Referee Nick Richardson confirmed this morning that he would be reporting the incident.

It is alleged that a St Paul’s player verbally confronted a Grouville player and when the Saints player was pulled away by a team-mate the Grouville player then struck the St Paul’s player who was pulling his colleague away.

A number of players from both teams, some clearly trying to calm the situation, then ‘piled in,’ according to Richardson, before they were separated by club and the match officials.

An incident in the first half may well have sown the seeds of the confrontation.

Grouville’s Josh Collins threw the ball twice at the head of a St Paul’s player as he was about to take a throw-in on the half-way line.

Collins was cautioned for his action.

Chances were few and far between last night with Richard Stevens just missing a late Grouville winner with a toe-poke that went narrowly wide.

Grouville missed the chance to regain third place in Coca-Cola Combination Division I as St Peter, Grouville, First Tower and St Paul’s contest the remaining three positions for entry into Guernsey’s Jeremie Cup next season.

Hopefully tempers will have abated by next Tuesday as the teams meet again in the Le Riches Cup final at Springfield.
