Football:Scottish retain Division I title

Muratti captain Chris Andrews scored the only goal 15 minutes from the end, Ross Crick crossing for Andrews to run on to and hit home.

Trinity’s defeat ended their quest for the James Marquis Memorial Trophy and was their first home reverse since Grouville defeated them 2-1 for league points on 9 February 2002.

Scottish manager Bob Kearsey said today: ‘The result’s had time to settle in now and it’s a great feeling to retain the title.

It’s been a tough season, and so different from last year.

‘We hit a lot of highs last season and played well, but this time it’s been much harder because of the injuries we’ve suffered, players going away and just not playing as well.

But it’s extremely rewarding to pick up the trophy again.’ Scottish lost the touring James Scott and Mark Brown just before Christmas, while former Muratti defender Paul Duxbury has been out all season with a knee injury – making his comeback on Saturday after coming on as a substitute.

Kearsey added: ‘It was a tough game – they always are against Trinity.

Both sides hit the ball long in the first half when there was probably just one chance each.

‘I told the lads we would not play for a 0-0 draw and that to improve we had to get hold of the ball and pass it around more.

We did that and eventually got the break for the goal.

We dominated last year’s Upton Park Trophy game against St Martin’s but we lost on penalties.

We want to put that right this year, no matter who we play.’ Scottish’s championship success was their eighth in 14 years.

St Ouen were relegated from the top flight on Saturday after Portuguese Club, who led 2-0 and 3-1, scored a late goal to draw 4-4 with St Paul’s.

Craig Leitch (three) and Stuart André scored for the Saints and Jose-Manuel Vieira (two) and Gabby Marques (two) for Portuguese.

Guernsey Sylvans, who won the Jeremie Cup final 2-1 against St Martin’s on Saturday, will win the Cable and Wireless Priaulx title tomorrow night if they win at Rangers.

Sylvans currently have a four-point lead over North, with both teams having two matches to play.

North lost ground on Saturday after drawing 2-2 at Rangers.
