GALLERY: Emergency Services open day

Crowds, mainly made up of young children and their parents, packed into the area outside the police and fire stations at Rouge Bouillon for live displays, interactive stalls and talks by staff from the States police, Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance.

Inside the police station visitors had the chance to see artist impressions of the new headquarters that is currently being built in Green Street and handle various pieces of handle of police equipment.

Joint demonstrations between the three emergency services, showing how they come together to deal with serious road traffic accidents, were also popular among onlookers who listened as staff with microphones explained what was happening.

Inspector Mark Coxshall, head of the community policing team, said events like this were vital for the emergency services in terms of public engagement and said he hoped to bring the event back for 2017.

‘It was booming, I’d do one of these every week if I could,’ he said.

‘It’s great for the children but while they’re engaged it gives us a change to engage with parents on the more serious subjects.

‘For example we had a colouring area for kids and somewhere they could have their fingerprints done and then around that we had stalls for parents on drug and internet safety – some of the main challenges we are facing at the moment.’

Inspector Coxshall thanked B&Q for helping them operate a park-and-ride scheme and the Savoy Hotel for allowing them to use their car park.
