GALLERY: Walkers take the orange route in Marc’s memory

Marc’s Walk has been an annual event for the last four years organised by Willy Nieuwburg, who lost his son Marc in 2006.

This year a total of 248 Islanders took part in the walk, as well as a piglet, Princess Leia, who was wearing a tiny orange hat.

People are encouraged to wear orange to the event to commemorate Marc’s Dutch heritage.

Mr Nieuwburg spray-painted an orange zebra crossing onto the road near Val de la Mare, and his son Ross completed the walk while dressed as a turtle.

There were three routes of varying distances: the longest, 14 miles, beginning at Plémont; a seven-mile route starting at Val de la Mare; and a shorter walk of three miles beginning from St Aubin.

Mr Nieuwburg said: ‘Everyone had a great time.

‘The scenery was spectacular at Plémont and the weather was great.

‘Every year I say I won’t do it again because it is so much work but I know I will do it again next year.’

It is hoped that this year’s event will have raised £10,000 or more, in addition to the £75,000 has raised in previous years.

Next year will mark the tenth anniversary of Marc’s death, and his father would like to reach £100,000.

The proceeds will go towards the Teenage Cancer Trust, as well as CLIC Sargent Jersey.
