GALLERY: Dancing in the streets as town goes en fête

Hundreds attended the two-day festival, which featured several local bands, a hip-hop showcase, a saints and sinners fancy-dress parade and a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament.

As part of the street party, which was held in Broad Street and Parade Gardens and in the Romerils car park, there were also performances by the Cannon O’Rafferty School of Irish Dance, demonstrations by the De Mond Gymnastics Academy as well as graffiti art from the Inkramental Crew, a set from DJ Stefunk, dodgems, bouncy castles and face painting.

In addition to the entertainment, there were craft and food stalls from local businesses.

Speaking at the end of the fête, which is in its third year and is held as part of the St Helier Day celebrations, St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft said that it had been a ‘tremendous success’.

‘It’s been fantastic and certainly exceeded expectations,’ he added.

‘We’ve had more people here than last year, more live music and some great new additions with the Irish dancing, the hip hop and the jiu jitsu.

‘With the fancy dress parade it was quite a small event, but we attracted quite a few people and by the time we got to the Royal Square we had a marvellous impromptu rhumba.

Mr Crowcroft said that it had been a great event to have been part of and that there had been a carnival-type atmosphere in town.

He added: ‘If there’s one message that I take away from the weekend, it’s that we need to do it on a more regular, perhaps twice or three times a year, and that’s what I am going to go away and work with my team to achieve.’

CONGRATULATIONS to St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft, the town Deputies and a host of others who helped to organise the Fête de St Helier Street Party over the weekend.

It put a smile on many faces, young and old.

Mr Crowcroft says we need to do more things like this and plans to organise two or three such events a year.

Quite right, Constable – that has got to be good for Islanders and visitors.
