Mums celebrate law change by breastfeeding in public – pictures and video

Last month States Members voted unanimously to protect mothers against discrimination if they choose to feed their babies in public.

The Big Latch took place at Millbrook Park on Tuesday morning to celebrate the changes to the law.

The event was launched by the wife of the Lieutenant-Governor, Lady Gene McColl, to raise awareness of how important it is for breastfeeding mothers to be able to feed their babies anywhere outside their homes.

The event, which was friendly and relaxed with a celebratory mood, was organised by Jersey Child Care Trust, Family Nursing and Home Care, midwives from States of Jersey and National Childbirth Trust Jersey.

Fiona Vacher, executive director of the Jersey Child Care Trust said: ‘The Big Latch event was a tremendous success and a brilliant example of multi-agency working.

‘It gave us a good opportunity to speak to those parents who were planning on returning to work about how they can continue to breastmilk-feed and work.

‘We gave out copies of the sample policy which employers can adopt for their employees, called Breastfeeding and Expressing in the Workplace, which also has a case study to show how the small adjustments that the employer can easily do make this entirely possible.’

Liz Gosselin of NCT Jersey added: ‘The Big Latch was organised by the breastfeeding working group, which is a multidisciplinary group consisting of health visitors, midwives, and representatives from the Jersey Child Care Trust, and the National Childbirth Trust.

‘I am extremely pleased that the amendment to the sex discrimination law was passed at the last States sitting and hope it will go some way to help mothers feel more comfortable when feeding in public.’
