More than 1,200 took their starting positions at La Frégate to take part in the Race for Life, raising an estimated £60,000 for the charity.

For the second year running, participants had a choice of two routes – 5 km to Bel Royal and back, or the longer 10 km to St Aubin and back.

More than a dozen marshals from the Rotary Club of Jersey and Rotary de la Manche were positioned along the route and gave encouragement to the runners.

Event organiser Liz Frisby said: ‘It was an absolutely fantastic day despite the awful conditions.

‘Even though it was raining the atmosphere was amazing and all the women were very determined to go ahead.

‘So many of the women here have been affected by cancer, so they have very personal reasons for taking part and for many of them it was quite an emotional experience.

‘We do not make it a competitive event and people can go at whatever speed they like, but we still had some really fast people doing the 5k in about 18 minutes, which is quite amazing.’
