GALLERY: Carousel in whirl of a show

A WAYWARD daughter, an ugly duckling and a clowder of cats all featured in this year’s Carousel School of Dancing show, which opened at the Jersey Opera House last night.

Under Monica Noel, the school’s principal and the show’s producer, around 200 pupils, who range in age from four to 20, performed four different sets including scenes from a ballet, two West End shows and a selection of fairy tales.

The production consisted of excerpts from West Side Story, Cats, the ballet La Fille Mal Gardée (the Wayward Daughter) and Bedtime Stories, the latter being performed by the younger members of the cast.

Music from the shows included I Feel Pretty and Maria from West Side Story and a selection of popular numbers, such as Memory, from the hit musical Cats.

And the little ones from the dance school provided the cute factor when around 100 youngsters performed in the Bedtime Stories section, which included songs such as the Ugly Duckling, Never Smile at a Crocodile, and the Princess’s song from Frozen.

And in this Saturday’s matinée performance there will be a special appearance by six Tinkerbells, played by the youngest members of the school, who are three and four years old.

Monica has put the show together with the help of choreographers Deborah Marett (Bedtime Stories), Alicia Parker (West Side Story), Natalia Le Claire (La Fille Mal Gardée) Julie Stanier (Cats) and wardrobe mistress Julia Le Brun.

As this year is the 70th Anniversary of Liberation the school is donating all profits to the Jersey branch of the British Red Cross.

The show continues at the Opera House at 7.30 pm nightly until Saturday, with a matinée performance on Saturday at 2.30 pm.
