GALLERY: Hair-raising designers bring novels to life at Highlands

AN inventive array of literary-based hair and make-up designs was on display at Highlands College on Monday night.

Students from the college’s hair and beauty department took part in the annual competition, ranging from Level 2 and 3 beauty students to those from Year 1 and 2, as well as 14- to 16-year-old students.

Now in its tenth year, the competition had a Classic Novels theme and saw students recreating the likes of James Bond, the Great Gatsby and Alice in Wonderland on stage.

One group even tackled a book of horror.

Highlands College’s reception and commercial manager Carol Begg said that the evening was a celebration of all the work the students had done throughout the school year.

‘They’ve really had to be well prepared for this,’ she said. ‘They had to go out and find models, create a storyboard and source their own materials.

‘Then they had to prepare the models for the show – clothes, hair, make-up and so on.’

Among those judging the results were Paul Mooney, hair stylist at 4 York Street, Sharon Ralston, manager at Hair Central, and freelance make-up artist Keira Tompkins of Urban Rose.

‘There was a great atmosphere,’ said Carol. ‘We’re privileged to have use of a venue as good as the Great Hall at Highlands.’

The night included a talk from Beth Moore at Macmillan Jersey about the charity’s work and what the money raised throughout the evening would be used for.
