Deacon and wife look back on 50 years of laughter and love

Iain MacFirbhisigh, who was born in Dublin, had travelled to Jersey with friends with the intention of staying for a year or two, after having spent a long period in hospital suffering from polio and thus missing out on university.

But his encounter with the young Cheryl Butcher changed his plans. He remembers that their first date was at Ritz Hotel and it was clearly a success as the couple later became engaged and were married on 19 March 1966 at the old St Mary and St Peter’s Church in Vauxhall Street.
