Callum Gillies (24), a radiotherapy physicist at University College London Hospital, was among those who joined a group from the Christie NHS Foundation Trust to ride from Manchester to London to raise funds for the UK’s first NHS high-energy proton-beam therapy centres.
Callum, a former student of Victoria College, said that despite not having time for a lot of training, he had thoroughly enjoyed the experience and that they had raised close to £10,000 as a result.
Currently patients requiring high-energy proton-beam therapy have to travel abroad for long periods of time to receive the state-of-the-art treatment as the service is not available in the UK. The treatments will be delivered in Manchester and London as a national service combining the expertise of cancer specialists from two hospitals from 2018.
