THE design of a nine-year-old pupil at St Martin’s Primary School has been chosen as the official flag of this year’s Barclay’s Jersey Boat Show.

Ellie Van de Ven won the annual flag design competition open to the Island’s children and her colourful anchor flag will be flown at the event over the May bank holiday weekend.

Ellie will receive a gift voucher and a mini replica of her flag and will help the Harbourmaster, Phillip Buckley, hoist her design up on the New North Quay at the opening ceremony.

St Martin’s Primary School will also receive a prize voucher for Ellie’s efforts.

The marketing and communications manager for the Ports of Jersey, Alan Donald, praised the high standard of entries this year and thanked all those who entered the competition.

He said: ‘The judging panel told me that they really enjoyed looking at all the entries and were unanimous in their choice of Ellie as this year’s winner.’

The Jersey Boat Show will take place from Saturday 2 May to Monday 4 May around St Helier Marina and Weighbridge Place, with admission free of charge.

Radisson has a charity in Mind

The Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel

RADISSON Blu Waterfront Hotel has pledged to support mental health charity Mind Jersey throughout 2015 by hosting a range of events and initiatives.

Activities are already under way with the launch of a £1 on bills donation scheme, with 50 pence going to Mind Jersey and the other 50 pence supporting the Radisson Group’s chosen charity, World Childhood Foundation.

The hotel also hosted a sponsored bed-making competition in February, encouraging Islanders to beat the housekeeping team’s record of 2.44 seconds.

James Le Feuvre of Mind Jersey

Executive director of Mind Jersey James Le Feuvre said that the charity was a small one which provided support to people living with mental illness, and that it was delighted to have the support of the hotel.

‘We have a vision of a society that promotes and protects good mental health for all and treats people with experience of mental illness, fairly, positively and with respect,’ he said.

‘We provide support and help so that people can take control of their mental health and live full lives and are currently running a campaign to tackle the stigma that still exists around mental health.

‘We are doing this in a number of ways so as to increase understanding and awareness about this condition and encourage people to seek help much sooner than they might otherwise have done so’.

Mind Jersey is affiliated with Mind in the UK, but all money raised by Mind Jersey stays in the Island.

Hotel general manager Fergus O’Donovan said that the staff were unanimous that Mind Jersey should be their charity partner throughout 2015.

‘Mind Jersey works exceptionally hard supporting Islanders living with or affected by mental health issues and providing information, advocacy, support for families and carers as well as training relating to mental health,’ he said.

‘At Radisson Blu we will be supporting Mind Jersey though offering our time and facilities in support of the charity, as well as hosting fundraising initiatives and events to raise vital funds.’
