Space for businesses to grow

Over the past few weeks office space on the first floor of the library has been transformed into a Barclays Eagle Lab, with seating for 20 individuals plus a specialised ‘makerspace’ area with two 3D printers, a laser cutter and vinyl cutter where creative ideas can be turned into prototypes.

A ‘co-working space’ is designed so that people can work together on a project and bring in their own equipment – and this is one area of the library where silence is not encouraged.

‘We want this to be a collaborative space where businesses can support each other,’ said Barclays UK implementation manager Jen Estherby.

The Eagle Lab in Jersey is the ninth the bank has funded and implemented around the British Isles. The States of Jersey and the library will be responsible for the running costs.

Desk spaces can be booked online and will cost £40 for five days a month or £120 a month for a full-time space. Users will also have access to mentors, workshops and financial advisers, as well as external advisers from organisations such as Digital Jersey and Jersey Business, with local firm Signtech offering a branding package for start-up businesses.
